Kyle Isaiah Baldwin, a 28-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed in the early hours of April 15, 2019, in Ensley, a neighborhood in Pensacola, Florida. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of East Ensley and Vickie Streets. Baldwin was found in a blue Chevrolet Blazer, slumped over in the front passenger seat with a fatal gunshot wound to his lower chest area.
The vehicle, driven by an unidentified individual, was stopped by a deputy from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) after it was seen moving erratically. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Baldwin was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly identified Bobby Johndal Hawkins as a suspect. Hawkins, who was 25 years old at the time, was later arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm and attempted first-degree premeditated murder. According to reports, Hawkins was driving a black Cadillac XTS and had been chasing Baldwin's vehicle through Ensley. Shell casings were found along several streets, indicating a prolonged pursuit and exchange of gunfire. Witnesses reported that Baldwin had exited his vehicle at one point to confront the occupants of the Cadillac, suggesting a possible prior conflict or "hit" placed on Baldwin.
Hawkins was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree premeditated murder. He was held without bond as the investigation continued. The ECSO indicated that more arrests could be made, as another individual in Hawkins' vehicle also participated in the shooting but had not been identified at the time. The case highlighted ongoing issues of violence and crime in the Pensacola area, drawing significant attention from local law enforcement and the community.
