Dinorah Rodriguez, a 14-year-old girl from Brandon, Florida, tragically lost her life on June 17, 2019, due to a fatal shooting. Dinorah, who had spent much of her young life in and out of foster care, was described by friends and family as a positive and beautiful soul. On the day of the incident, Dinorah was a passenger in a black car that was targeted while driving near the intersection of Kingsway Road and East Clay Avenue. The car was shot at, and Dinorah was struck by a bullet.
She was immediately taken to Brandon Hospital and later flown to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. Despite the medical efforts, Dinorah succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The investigation into Dinorah's death revealed that the shooting was not intended for her but was instead aimed at another occupant of the vehicle. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office conducted multiple interviews and determined that the teenagers in the car had just left a house party. It was discovered that a male occupant in the vehicle had a long-standing conflict with the suspect, 16-year-old Dereck Rivera. Rivera, a certified gang member with the "TC Boys" based in Town 'N Country, was believed to have targeted the car due to this ongoing feud. However, the shooting itself was not considered gang-related.
On June 26, 2019, Dereck Rivera was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Dinorah's death. The arrest brought some measure of relief to Dinorah's family and friends, who were devastated by the loss of such a young and vibrant life. Rivera's case was closely followed by the community, and the State Attorney's Office later determined that he would be charged as an adult. In a plea deal, Rivera eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a weapons charge, resulting in a sentence of 13 years in prison followed by eight years of probation.
