Kelly Jo Brubaker, a 49-year-old sergeant with the Orange City Police Department, tragically passed away on November 19, 2019, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Her death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On the evening of her death, Brubaker was found floating in the surf near SunSplash Park, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m., and her body was discovered in approximately two feet of water.
The Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue and the Daytona Beach Police Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of the incident.
Brubaker had served with the Orange City Police Department for over 12 years, joining as a patrol officer in July 2007 and being promoted to sergeant in November 2011. She was well-respected within her department, known for her knowledge, experience, and mentorship of younger officers. In addition to her police work, Brubaker was an adjunct instructor at Daytona State College, where she trained future law enforcement personnel. She also held a Master's degree in criminal justice, which she obtained in 2016.
The news of Brubaker's death came as a shock to her colleagues and community, as there were no prior indications of illness or stress. Her unexpected passing left her fellow officers and the community grieving. Brubaker was described as a happy and compassionate person who was always laughing and engaging positively with those around her.
