Alexander Antonio Nowell, a 29-year-old resident of Avon Park, Florida, tragically lost his life on May 9, 2020. The incident occurred at a bar called "The Joint" located at 941 S. Delaney Ave. in Avon Park. On that fateful night, an altercation broke out, leading to a shooting that claimed Nowell's life. The confrontation, which stemmed from an earlier argument, escalated quickly, resulting in gunfire that not only killed Nowell but also wounded two other individuals present at the scene.
Following the incident, a thorough investigation was launched by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office. The diligent efforts of Detective Du'Wayne Kelly and the Criminal Investigations Unit, along with the District 10 office of the State’s Attorney, led to the arrest and conviction of Jimmy Lamar Ford Jr. Ford was charged with second-degree homicide and firing a weapon in public. His trial concluded with a conviction, and he was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for his role in the murder of Alexander Antonio Nowell.
