The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 4:46 a.m., when Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputies responded to a shooting in the 2400 block of Northwest Ninth Street. Upon arrival, they found McFadden deceased from a single gunshot wound. The preliminary investigation revealed that McFadden had been involved in a verbal altercation with Keniesia Nikitress Lewis, a 21-year-old female, which escalated to the point where Lewis shot McFadden and then fled the scene.
Keniesia Nikitress Lewis, who is also African American, became the primary suspect in the case. She was known to frequent the Franklin Park area of Fort Lauderdale and had family ties in Coconut Creek. Following the incident, an active arrest warrant for manslaughter with a firearm was issued for Lewis. Despite efforts by law enforcement to locate her, she remained at large for some time, with reports suggesting she might have been in Miami after the shooting.
