On the evening of June 25, 2021, a gathering of approximately 50 to 100 individuals took place near the end of Columbia Lane in West Melbourne, Florida. Among the attendees was 19-year-old Andre Hutchinas, a recent Melbourne High School graduate and former football player. During the event, an argument erupted between 26-year-old Gregory Stefan Alan Barr II and another individual over a spilled drink. The confrontation escalated when Barr allegedly brandished a knife, placing it against the other person's throat. In an attempt to defuse the situation, Hutchinas intervened. Barr then turned the knife toward Hutchinas, who managed to evade the attack and responded by punching Barr in self-defense. Subsequently, Barr drew a Glock 19 9mm handgun from his waistband and shot Hutchinas once in the neck. Emergency responders transported Hutchinas to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Barr surrendered without incident. He was taken into custody and later admitted to the shooting during an interview with police. Barr was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Following his arrest, Barr's defense attorney raised concerns about his client's competency to stand trial, citing a head injury and brain bleed that allegedly manifested after the incident. This led to a court-ordered competency evaluation to assess Barr's mental state. In September 2023, a jury found Barr guilty of manslaughter with a firearm, a lesser charge than the original second-degree murder count. He was also found guilty of aggravated assault with a knife. In the aftermath of Hutchinas's death, his family and friends remembered him as a "gentle giant" with an infectious smile.
