Demetrius Harris, a 27-year-old Black male, was tragically killed on July 25, 2021, in Miami, Florida. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 13800 block of Southwest 270th Street during a heated dispute between neighbors. According to reports, Harris was involved in an argument with a woman named Maxine McCord and her family members in the courtyard of their apartment complex.
During the altercation, McCord's boyfriend, Joshua Ismael Campos, then 19 years old, emerged from his apartment and fired multiple shots at Harris. The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found Harris suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Campos and McCord fled the scene, leaving their one-year-old child with relatives. Campos, who was 23 years old at the time of his arrest, was wanted by the FBI for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The FBI and Miami-Dade Police Department conducted an extensive manhunt for Campos, offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his capture. Campos was eventually apprehended by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office more than three years after the incident.
