Massania Malcolm, a 20-year-old Black woman from Orlando, Florida, was living with her boyfriend, Jordane Reid, and their 1-year-old daughter, Jordania Reid. The young family had taken in a childhood friend of Jordane’s, Doujon Duwayne Griffiths, who was homeless. After about a month of Griffiths living with them, tensions grew because he was not contributing to household expenses, and Massania wanted him to leave. This disagreement led to a devastating series of events in September 2021.

On the morning of September 7, 2021, Jordane Reid agreed to drive Griffiths to a bus station. Massania joined them, sitting in the front passenger seat with baby Jordania in her lap, while Griffiths sat in the back. As Reid began to back the car out of their apartment’s parking lot on Lake Heritage Circle, Griffiths shot him multiple times from behind. Wounded, Reid managed to jump out of the car and run for help as Griffiths continued to fire at him. Griffiths then drove away in the car, with Massania and her baby still inside.

Deputies responding to a 911 call found Jordane Reid lying behind a bush with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital for surgery and survived his injuries. Two days later, on September 9, after family members reported Massania and Jordania missing, authorities located the couple’s car in a parking lot on Lake Ellenor Drive. Inside, they made a tragic discovery: the bodies of Massania and her daughter. A medical examiner determined that Massania had died from gunshot wounds to her face, neck, and hand. Jordania had no noticeable injuries and was believed to have died from heat exhaustion after being left in the hot vehicle.

Jordane Reid identified Griffiths as the shooter, and a manhunt began. For nearly three years, Griffiths remained a fugitive, altering his appearance by growing dreadlocks. His time on the run ended in March 2024, when police in Linden, New Jersey, arrested him during a routine traffic stop and discovered the outstanding murder warrants from Florida. Griffiths was extradited to Orange County to face charges for the killings.

In May 2024, a grand jury indicted Griffiths on charges of first-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, and three counts of shooting at, within, or into a building. His trial began in late September 2026, where Jordane Reid testified against the man he had tried to help. In October 2026, after about 20 minutes of deliberation, a jury found Doujon Griffiths guilty on all counts. His sentencing was scheduled for November 16, 2026.
