Essie May Copeland, a 70-year-old resident of Monticello, Florida, tragically lost her life on August 23, 2022. On that evening, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) responded to a reported shooting in the area of East Clark Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Copeland suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by Jefferson County EMS, she succumbed to her injuries later that night. This incident has drawn significant attention due to its occurrence exactly one year after a previous shooting at the same location, which resulted in the deaths of two young men, Lyndon Dawson and Jamien Davis.
The investigation into Copeland's death led to the arrest of 17-year-old Lance Nealy Jr., who was charged with her murder. Nealy has been charged as an adult and is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail. The case remains under investigation, with the JCSO, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and the State Attorney’s Office working diligently to uncover further details and bring justice to Copeland's family and friends. However, further evidence showed that Venisee had not hit any person, leading to the dropping of the murder charge. Venisee later pleaded no contest to other charges and is currently serving a two-year sentence.
