Cesar Rosales, a 19-year-old resident of Mulberry, Florida, tragically passed away on September 21, 2022. Born on March 20, 2003, in Tampa, Florida, Cesar had spent his entire life in Mulberry. He graduated from Mulberry High School in 2021 and worked as a landscaper. Cesar was known for his strong Catholic faith and was deeply loved by his family, including his parents Mateo and Maria Rosales, his siblings Ricardo and Jacqueline, and his fiancée Juanita Espinoza.
On the evening of September 21, 2022, Cesar was found with a gunshot wound at his residence on Laurel Crest Drive. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident was reported to the authorities by 18-year-old Andres Garcia Pineda, who called 911 to inform them that he had accidentally shot his friend. According to Pineda, he had picked up a handgun from the couch to check if it was loaded and inadvertently pulled the trigger. The bullet went through a glass door and struck Cesar, who was standing on the porch.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the incident. Detectives discovered that Cesar and Pineda were living together with four other teenagers at the time of the shooting. The other teens corroborated Pineda's account, stating that they were all inside the house when the shooting occurred. However, further investigation revealed that the teens had attempted to hide the gun and mislead the authorities. Text messages between two of the teens indicated that they had cleaned the gun and hidden it in a nearby field.
As a result of the investigation, Andres Garcia Pineda was charged with manslaughter and held in the Polk County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The four other teenagers faced charges of tampering with evidence and providing false information to law enforcement officers. They were detained at the Polk County Juvenile Assessment Center. The case highlighted the dangers of mishandling firearms and the severe consequences of attempting to obstruct justice.
