Harry S. Van Meter, a 29-year-old officer with the Fresno Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 21, 1907. Officer Van Meter was conducting a routine business check near I Street and Inyo Street when he encountered a burglary in progress. As he circled around the business and entered an alley, he was ambushed by a suspect who shot him four times before fleeing the scene.
