On May 8, 1907, Constable John "Jack" Hewitt was on duty in the town of Kennet, California, when he was tragically killed. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the Owl Dance Hall, where Hewitt was summoned by Frank Tast, the bartender. Tast reported that a man had threatened one of the women at the dance hall and had also threatened Tast when he intervened.
