On August 27, 1954, California Highway Patrol Officer William McCrea Chansler, aged 32, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Officer Chansler was off duty when he responded to a call about an armed suspect who had shot a waitress and was holding hostages at a local restaurant in Happy Camp, California. Despite being off duty, Officer Chansler's sense of duty and bravery led him to the scene to assist. Upon arrival, he confronted the suspect, ordering him to drop his weapon. The suspect, armed with a .30-.30 rifle, turned and fired at Officer Chansler, striking him three times. Despite his severe injuries, Officer Chansler managed to return fire, fatally wounding the suspect with a single shot. Unfortunately, Officer Chansler succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital in Yreka.
The incident that led to Officer Chansler's death began when the suspect, in a desperate attempt to reconcile with his estranged wife, who was working as a waitress at the restaurant, took several employees hostage. The suspect's wife had fled the scene and sought help from Officer Chansler. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in the tragic shootout. Officer Chansler's actions were later recognized for their heroism, and he was posthumously awarded the Certificate of Valor by Governor Goodwin J. Knight.
Officer Chansler's death marked the 68th line-of-duty death in the history of the California Highway Patrol since its formation in 1929. His sacrifice is commemorated on the California Peace Officers' Memorial in Sacramento and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Officer Chansler, a World War II veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps, had been with the California Highway Patrol for over two years. He left behind a wife, two daughters, and his mother. His legacy of bravery and dedication to public service continues to be honored by his family and colleagues.
