Melvin Bishop, also known as Melvin X, was a prominent figure in the Black Student Union at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Born in Texas in 1947 or 1948, he moved to Los Angeles at a young age and became deeply involved in civil rights activism. On June 22, 1970, at the age of 22, Melvin X was found dead in Mira Loma, California. His body was discovered in the driver's seat of a sedan registered to Elaine Parker, a fellow UCLA student.
