David Brian Kubly, a 23-year-old police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 27, 1979. Officer Kubly had been serving with the department for 18 months when the incident occurred. On that fateful day, he attempted to stop a vehicle that had run a red light, unaware that the driver was a robbery suspect. The suspect led Officer Kubly on a brief vehicle pursuit, which ended when the suspect's car crashed into a local business.
As the suspect emerged from the wrecked vehicle, he opened fire on Officer Kubly with a 9 mm handgun, striking him in the chest. Officer Kubly was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The suspect, a 22-year-old man, was apprehended nine hours after the shooting. The investigation revealed that the suspect had stolen the car and committed several robberies earlier that day. During the trial, the suspect was found guilty of murdering Officer Kubly and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As of December 1, 2022, the suspect remains incarcerated at Chuckawalla State Prison.
Officer Kubly's death was a significant loss to the Los Angeles Police Department and the community he served. He was survived by his wife, parents, and three sisters. In honor of his sacrifice, Officer Kubly is remembered and honored by his colleagues and the community.
