Richard Earl Deffner, a 36-year-old sergeant with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life on January 21, 1988, in Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California. On that fateful day, Sergeant Deffner was leading a Special Operations Team in pursuit of an armed robbery suspect who had recently committed several robberies at gunpoint.
The suspect, after being spotted by officers, led them on a high-speed chase, eventually crashing his car and fleeing on foot while firing shots at the pursuing officers.
The pursuit led to an intensive search involving officers, K-9 units, and helicopters, covering an eight-block perimeter. Despite the extensive efforts, the suspect managed to evade capture initially. Hours later, the suspect was spotted again, leading to another confrontation where he fired at officers and fled to a public storage area near a large apartment complex. Sergeant Deffner, recognizing the tactical advantage the suspect would have from the roof of the complex, decided to search the roof with two of his team members. Tragically, as Sergeant Deffner peered over the edge of the roof, he was shot in the face by the suspect, who was hiding below. Sergeant Deffner succumbed to his injuries that night, making the ultimate sacrifice for his community and fellow officers.
The suspect continued his attempt to escape, briefly holding two women and an infant hostage in a nearby apartment. The standoff ended when the suspect was fatally shot by officers after he emerged from the apartment and opened fire. Sergeant Deffner was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor for his bravery and dedication to duty. His death was a significant loss to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the community he served. The gymnasium at the Sheriff's Training Academy was later dedicated and named in his honor, ensuring that his legacy of courage and service would not be forgotten.
