Richard Earl Deffner, a 36-year-old sergeant with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life on January 21, 1988, in Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California. On that fateful day, Sergeant Deffner was leading a Special Operations Team in pursuit of an armed robbery suspect who had recently committed several robberies at gunpoint.
