Beamon Aton Hill, a 16-year-old student from Olivehurst, California, tragically lost his life on May 1, 1992, during the Lindhurst High School shooting. On that fateful day, Eric Houston, a former student of Lindhurst High School, entered the school armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a sawed-off .22 caliber rifle. Houston, who had been despondent over losing his job and failing to graduate from high school, targeted students and staff in a violent rampage.
He fatally shot teacher Robert Brens, student Judy Davis, and student Jason Edward White before encountering Beamon Hill.
Beamon Hill's death was marked by an act of heroism. As Houston aimed his weapon at another student, Angela Welch, Beamon intervened, pushing her to safety. In doing so, he took a fatal bullet to the side of his head, sacrificing his life to save hers. This act of bravery highlighted Beamon's selflessness and courage, making his death even more poignant for the Olivehurst community.
The aftermath of the shooting saw Eric Houston engaging in an eight-hour standoff with police, during which he held over 80 students hostage. Eventually, Houston surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. He was charged with multiple counts of murder and other related crimes. On September 21, 1993, Houston was found guilty of all charges and was sentenced to death. His death penalty was upheld by the California Supreme Court in 2012, and he remains on death row, awaiting execution.
