As they were leaving the park, gang members seeking retaliation for the deaths of two of their associates earlier that day mistakenly targeted an Inglewood man who was not involved in gang activities.
The gang members opened fire with an assault rifle, and a stray bullet struck Evan in the head while he was sitting in the back of his mother's car, wearing his favorite Batman suit. His 10-month-old brother, Alec, was also injured by shrapnel in the eye during the attack.
The community was deeply shocked by the senseless violence that claimed Evan's life. In the aftermath of the shooting, three gang members were charged with murder and attempted murder. Charles Baker, 21, Kevin Bookman, 20, and Ollie Wilkins, 18, were identified as the perpetrators. Wilkins and Bookman were arrested along with a 17-year-old boy, while Baker, the suspected triggerman, remained at large. The charges against them included the murder of Evan Foster and the attempted murder of his brother Alec.
