Malcolm Turner Webb, a 22-year-old male, was shot and killed on December 15, 2016. His death came after he had survived a previous shooting in 2015, an incident reportedly stemming from a dispute over a small amount of money. Webb had identified his assailant to the police from his hospital bed and was cooperating with prosecutors.
The path to justice for the initial shooting was fraught with intimidation. After testifying before a grand jury, Webb began receiving threats on his Instagram account. These menacing messages also targeted his friends, all in an effort to prevent him from testifying at the upcoming criminal trial. Despite the danger, he was determined to see the case through. However, he would never get the chance to take the stand. His murder silenced a key witness and brought the attempted murder case to a halt.
With Webb's death, the case against the man accused of the 2015 shooting, Wayne Johnson Jr., was dismissed. The cycle of violence did not end there, as Johnson himself was murdered in 2019. While detectives investigating Malcolm Webb's killing have identified a suspect who is currently imprisoned for another murder, they have not been able to bring charges due to a lack of evidence. A detective informed Webb's mother that someone had called an anonymous tip line with information but was too afraid to testify, fearing for their own life. As a result, Malcolm Turner Webb's murder case remains officially unsolved.
