In the spring of 2017, just weeks before he was set to graduate, 19-year-old Markel Scott was fatally shot in East Baltimore, Maryland. A senior at Excel Academy, his death on March 16, 2017, sent ripples of grief through his family and school community. Markel was a young man who had overcome previous academic setbacks, having once dropped out of school. He had since rededicated himself to his education and was eagerly anticipating his upcoming graduation.
