On January 10, 2001, Pearlie Mae Feldman, aged 68, tragically lost her life in a mass shooting in Nevada City, California. Feldman was one of three victims killed by Scott Harlan Thorpe, a 40-year-old man who was a client of the Nevada County Department of Behavioral Health. Thorpe, who suffered from paranoia and agoraphobia, was reportedly unhappy with the care he had been receiving at the mental health clinic. On that fateful day, Thorpe entered the clinic armed with a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol and opened fire, killing Feldman and 19-year-old Laura Wilcox, a college student working as a temporary receptionist. Another individual was injured in the shooting, while a fourth person sustained injuries after jumping from a window to escape the gunfire.
Following the initial attack, Thorpe fled the scene and drove to a nearby Lyon's Restaurant in Grass Valley, where he continued his rampage. At the restaurant, he fatally shot the manager, 24-year-old Mike Markle, and injured another employee. Thorpe then returned to his home in Smartsville, where he was later apprehended by authorities after a three-hour standoff. Thorpe's brother, a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy, played a crucial role in his arrest by notifying the authorities after Thorpe confessed to the shootings over the phone.
The aftermath of the shooting spree led to significant legal proceedings. Thorpe faced multiple charges, including three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The case also prompted the implementation of "Laura's Law," named after Laura Wilcox, one of the victims.
