On January 10, 2001, Pearlie Mae Feldman, aged 68, tragically lost her life in a mass shooting in Nevada City, California. Feldman was one of three victims killed by Scott Harlan Thorpe, a 40-year-old man who was a client of the Nevada County Department of Behavioral Health. Thorpe, who suffered from paranoia and agoraphobia, was reportedly unhappy with the care he had been receiving at the mental health clinic.
