On May 15, 2001, a tragic incident occurred in Lodi, California, resulting in the death of five-year-old Mikhala Burks, along with her siblings and grandmother. The perpetrator, Roger Leroy Johnson, was identified as the suspect in this horrific crime. Johnson, who was 48 years old at the time, was reportedly upset over a breakup with Rhonda Burks, the mother of the children and daughter of the grandmother, Pearl Burks.

On that fateful day, Johnson armed himself with a handgun and a knife and attacked the family at their home just southeast of Stockton. The victims included Pearl Burks, aged 48, and her grandchildren Ashley Burks, aged 6, Bobby Burks, aged 4, and Mikhala Burks, aged 5. The attack was brutal, and all four victims were shot to death. A terrified 10-year-old boy managed to escape the scene and call 911, which led to a statewide search for Johnson.

Law enforcement officers conducted an extensive manhunt, but Johnson managed to evade capture for several days. On May 19, 2001, Johnson was found dead at Cherokee Memorial Park & Funeral Home, lying face-down on his late wife's grave. He had committed suicide by cutting the main artery in at least one arm. Before his death, Johnson had also thrown a grenade at officers, which exploded with a flash and bang, further complicating the situation.
The case of Mikhala Burks and her family is a somber reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and emotional turmoil. The investigation concluded with Johnson's death, and no further arrests or litigations were pursued in connection with the murders.
