Leonard Larry Bruce Estes, a 61-year-old lieutenant with the Butte County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on July 26, 2001, in Inskip, California. On that fateful day, Lieutenant Estes and Deputy William Hunter responded to a call involving a neighbor dispute over rent money and the theft of weapons. The suspect, Richard Bracklow, had been involved in a heated argument with his elderly landlord, Bob Duffey.
When Estes and Hunter arrived at Bracklow's cabin, they were ambushed by Bracklow, who opened fire on them as they entered the dimly-lit residence.
Deputy Hunter, who led the entry, was shot three times in the head and died instantly. Lieutenant Estes, despite being struck multiple times, managed to return fire, hitting Bracklow several times before succumbing to his injuries. The confrontation was intense and occurred at very close range, with both Estes and Bracklow exchanging gunfire in a confined space. Estes was hit four times, including in the arm, chest, and head, while Bracklow was fatally wounded by Estes' shots.

Investigations into the incident revealed that Bracklow, a known survivalist, had a history of carrying weapons and had been involved in previous altercations.
