Ricardo Calderon, a 12-year-old boy from Simi Valley, California, tragically lost his life on September 7, 2001. Ricardo was one of three victims in a horrific shooting incident that took place in his family home. The other victims were his grandmother, Esperanza Martinez, aged 80, and his 4-year-old relative, Shantal Rios. The perpetrator, Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, entered the home through a garage door and opened fire on the family members present. Rodriguez, who was 35 years old at the time, believed that his ex-girlfriend, Maria Rios, had given him a viral disease, which led him to seek revenge on her family. Maria Rios was not at home during the attack.
The shooting also left three other family members injured. Lucia Vargas, 19, was shot in the abdomen and hand, while Rigoberto Calderon, 16, was shot in the leg. Rafael Calderon Jr., 18, managed to escape by jumping out of a second-story bathroom window, breaking his wrist in the process. The incident prompted a statewide manhunt for Rodriguez, who was a civil engineer working for the state Transportation Department. The search ended the following day when Rodriguez was found dead in the Los Padres National Forest. He had committed suicide as officers closed in on his campsite.
The case did not proceed to trial due to Rodriguez's death. However, the impact of the tragedy on the surviving family members and the community was profound. The incident highlighted issues related to domestic violence and the devastating consequences of unchecked mental health issues.
