Michael Frederick Clark, a 28-year-old police officer from Simi Valley, California, tragically lost his life on August 4, 1995. Officer Clark was responding to a call to check on a suicidal man at a residence on Aztec Court in Simi Valley. Upon arrival, Clark attempted to assist the distressed individual, demonstrating his commitment to protecting and serving his community. Unfortunately, the situation escalated when the man, who had a history of psychological issues and substance abuse, opened fire on the officers. Clark was fatally shot during the confrontation.
The man responsible for Clark's death was apprehended at the scene after being wounded by other officers. He was later identified as Daniel Tuffree. Tuffree was convicted of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon in January 1997. He was sentenced to 54 years to life in prison. Despite his eligibility for parole under a 2017 law that allows for elderly parole consideration, Tuffree's request for parole was denied in 2021 due to the severity of his crime and his lack of remorse.
Officer Clark's death had a profound impact on the Simi Valley community and the law enforcement fraternity. He was remembered as a compassionate and dedicated officer who had previously served with the Los Angeles Police Department before joining the Simi Valley Police Department. His funeral was attended by thousands, including fellow officers, family, and friends, who paid their respects and honored his service. In recognition of his sacrifice, the Highway 118 First Street overpass bridge was renamed the Simi Valley Police Officer Michael Clark Memorial Overcrossing in August 2016.
