Josue Zavaleta, a 14-year-old Latino male, tragically lost his life on October 11, 2003, in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles, California. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, Josue was shot and killed while he was in the vicinity of Orchard Avenue. On the evening of October 10, 2003, Josue was with a group of friends, including members of a tagging crew known as "S4M" (Sex For Money).
Although Josue was not affiliated with any gang, the area where they were hanging out was within the territory of the "Easy Riders" criminal street gang, which had a long-standing rivalry with the "Harpys" gang.
The incident occurred when a gray Toyota Camry, carrying members of the Harpys gang, drove slowly down Orchard Avenue. Ivan Mejia, a member of the Harpys gang with the moniker "Chilo," was in the back passenger seat of the vehicle. Mejia fired multiple shots from the car, targeting Josue's group and shouting a derogatory term aimed at the Easy Riders gang. One of the bullets struck Josue in the back of the head, resulting in his death. The shooting also endangered others in the vicinity, but fortunately, no one else was injured.
The investigation into Josue's murder remained unsolved for several years. However, significant progress was made when Jermaine Lavan, a witness who was present during the shooting, identified Ivan Mejia as the shooter. This identification led to Mejia's arrest and subsequent trial. Mejia was charged with first-degree murder, committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Mejia's actions were motivated by gang rivalry and that he had intentionally targeted the group on Orchard Avenue.
In 2010, Ivan Mejia was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 60 years to life in prison. The court also imposed additional penalties for gang-related enhancements and firearm use. Mejia's conviction was upheld on appeal, despite his claims of insufficient evidence and other procedural issues. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Los Angeles and the devastating impact it has on innocent lives, such as that of Josue Zavaleta.
