Robert D. Melton, a police officer with the Gardena Police Department in California, passed away on November 1, 2003, at the age of 61. His death was the result of complications from gunshot wounds he sustained on June 3, 1981. On that day, Officer Melton and his partner were flagged down by citizens who reported a robbery in progress near the intersection of Compton Boulevard (now Gardena Boulevard) and Vermont Avenue.
