Diego Armando Gonzalez, a 17-year-old high school wrestling champion from Orange, California, was tragically murdered on November 10, 2003. His body was discovered near a home construction site, having been shot and set on fire. The investigation revealed that Gonzalez had been shot in the forehead and mouth, and the condition of his body suggested an attempt to cover up the crime by burning it beyond recognition. Gonzalez had left home for a run on November 9 and never returned, prompting a search that led to the grim discovery the following day.
The investigation quickly focused on those close to Gonzalez, including his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Veronica Paz, and her longtime boyfriend, Brandan Dante Perry. It was uncovered that Paz and Perry had plotted to kill Gonzalez out of jealousy and revenge. Paz, who was angered by Gonzalez's attempts to rekindle a relationship with another girl while still contacting her for sex, purchased ammunition that matched the bullets used in the murder. In 2011, Paz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Perry, who had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in 2005, received a 25-year-to-life sentence after agreeing to testify against Paz.
