Fernando Pina, a 25-year-old from Zacatecas, Mexico, was tragically murdered on January 27, 2004, in South Whittier, California. Pina, along with Mario Larios and Edgar Valles, was lured to the home of Cimarron Bell under the pretense of purchasing a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Bell had advertised the car for sale, but his true intention was to rob and kill the prospective buyers. Upon arriving at Bell's residence, the three men were ambushed, shot, and robbed. Their bodies were later discovered in Larios' leased Mercedes-Benz, which had been abandoned behind a shopping center in La Mirada.
The investigation into the murders revealed that Bell, along with his accomplice Briaell Lee, had meticulously planned the crime. Bell was already under suspicion for the murder of his girlfriend, Ineka Edmondson, who was found shot to death in her car in November 2003. The murders of Pina, Larios, and Valles were initially unsolved until Bell's other girlfriend was arrested in a credit card fraud case and provided crucial information to the investigators. This led to Bell's arrest and subsequent trial.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Bell had no intention of selling the car and had lured the victims to his home to rob and kill them. The victims were found with their pockets turned inside out, indicating they had been robbed. DNA and blood evidence from the victims were found in Bell's home, along with patched bullet holes. The prosecution argued that Bell's motive was financial gain, as he was involved in various fraudulent schemes.
Bell was convicted of the murders and sentenced to death. His accomplice, Briaell Lee, was also charged and awaited trial.
