Michael Guadalupe Esparza, known as "Magic Mike," was a 34-year-old tattoo artist who tragically lost his life on May 1, 2004, after being shot in his tattoo parlor, Body Illusions, located in South Whittier, CA. On April 26, 2004, Esparza was working at his shop, giving a tattoo to a customer when three men wearing motorcycle gear entered the establishment around 3:30 p.m. One of the men opened fire, striking Esparza in the head. Despite the chaos, the customer and four other employees managed to escape unharmed. Esparza was immediately taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he succumbed to his injuries five days later.
The investigation into Esparza's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Nine months after the incident, Manuel Louis Jaramillo, a 23-year-old gang member, confessed to his involvement in the shooting. Jaramillo, along with two other gang members, targeted the tattoo parlor because some of Esparza's employees were affiliated with rival gangs. Although Esparza himself was not a gang member, the gang's directive to eliminate rivals led to the tragic event. Jaramillo claimed that his companions threatened to kill him if he did not participate in the shooting, and he admitted that one of the other men fired the fatal shots.
The Los Angeles County district attorney's office charged Jaramillo with one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder. During the trial, experts testified that it was unlikely for a gang to send someone to a shooting who was not prepared to follow through. They also highlighted Jaramillo's rising status within the gang, suggesting that committing such a brazen act in broad daylight would enhance his reputation. On July 1, 2008, a jury found Jaramillo guilty of all charges, and he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison and will be eligible for parole in 2029.
