On the night of his death, Kim and two friends encountered Erick Anthony Rodriguez, a gang member, at the Frisky Kitty strip club in Tarzana. However, as Kim and his friends drove away, Rodriguez followed them and, without provocation, fired multiple shots into their vehicle. One of the bullets struck Kim in the back of the head, causing him to lose control of his truck and crash into a tree. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
