On March 10, 2016, 21-year-old Martin Hurtado was fatally shot by police officers in Long Beach, California. The incident began when officers noticed a car driving without license plates, a violation that prompted them to initiate a traffic stop. As the car pulled over, both Hurtado, who was a passenger, and the driver fled the scene on foot. Officers pursued them, during which they noticed that Hurtado had a handgun in his right hand.
