The initial reports suggested that the incident was a case of road rage, where the shooter reacted to the Bolognas' car blocking his own. However, it was later revealed that the shooter, Edwin Ramos, mistook the Bologna family for rival gang members and sought retaliation for an unrelated attack earlier that day on MS-13 members in San Francisco’s Mission District.
Edwin Ramos, a 21-year-old gang member, was arrested on June 25, 2008, at his home in El Sobrante. Ramos, originally from El Salvador, had a history of criminal activities, including assault and attempted robbery. Despite significant evidence suggesting that the Bologna family was unaffiliated with any gang, Ramos claimed that he believed them to be active Norteno gang members, a known rival of MS-13. Ramos was charged with triple murder and attempted murder, with enhancements for multiple victims and gang membership. In 2012, he was convicted and sentenced to three life terms without the possibility of parole.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the background of the perpetrator. Ramos had entered the United States on a temporary visa in 2000 but stayed after the visa expired.
