On May 8, 2021, Robert Luis Mena Gallardo, a 25-year-old resident of San Francisco, was found suffering from gunshot wounds on the 100 block of Fern Street, located between Van Ness Avenue and Polk Street. Officers from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) responded to the scene at approximately 1:40 a.m. Despite the efforts of the officers and paramedics, Mena Gallardo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident left his family and community devastated, as they mourned the loss of a young man described as having a bright and playful demeanor.
The investigation into Mena Gallardo's death quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On May 18, 2021, SFPD officers arrested Ulysses Gutierrez, also 25 years old, near 46th Avenue and Judah Street. Gutierrez was taken into custody on charges of murder, carrying a loaded firearm in public, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and violating probation. Gutierrez was already on probation for a prior conviction related to firearm possession. A search warrant executed at Gutierrez's residence resulted in the seizure of additional evidence linking him to the crime.
The arrest of Gutierrez marked a significant development in the case, but the investigation remained active. The SFPD continued to gather information and urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. The community's response included a GoFundMe campaign to support Mena Gallardo's family during their time of grief, highlighting the impact of his loss on those who knew him.
As the legal proceedings unfolded, Gutierrez faced multiple charges in connection with the murder of Mena Gallardo. The case underscored the ongoing challenges of gun violence and the efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to victims and their families. The investigation into Mena Gallardo's death continued to be a priority for the SFPD, reflecting the broader commitment to addressing violent crime in San Francisco.
