Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Black man, was tragically killed in the early hours of New Year's Day on January 1, 2009, by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Police Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California. During the trial, Mehserle claimed that he had intended to draw his Taser but mistakenly pulled his gun instead. Mehserle was sentenced to two years in state prison but was released after serving 11 months.
The legal proceedings also included civil litigation. Grant's family filed a $50 million lawsuit against BART, which was eventually settled for $2.8 million.
