On March 13, 2016, 12-year-old Jason Spears was tragically shot and killed in a drive-by shooting while walking with his 14-year-old cousin, Terrance, to a convenience store in San Bernardino, California. The boys were near East Love Lane and North Orange Street when shots were fired from a dark-colored SUV. Both boys were struck, but despite their injuries, they managed to run to a nearby Circle K gas station for help.
Sadly, Jason collapsed and later died at the hospital, while his cousin survived and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The police have continued to investigate the incident, which marked the city's 15th homicide of the year. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed if it was gang-related. The area where the shooting occurred had a history of criminal activity, and police urged anyone with information to come forward. This senseless act of violence has left the family devastated, as Jason was described as an innocent child with no connection to gangs or street life.
