Ghulam Rabani Ayobi, aged 53, was tragically shot to death on December 18, 2011, in Sacramento, California. The incident occurred while he was driving home with his wife, Shajia Ayobi, from a dinner party in the Natomas area. Initially, Shajia Ayobi reported to the police that they were victims of a carjacking, during which her husband was fatally shot.
However, this narrative quickly unraveled as investigators found no evidence to support the carjacking claim.
As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that Shajia Ayobi had orchestrated her husband's murder. Prosecutors argued that she had multiple motives, including a desire to free herself from her husband's control and to claim $285,000 in insurance payments. Shajia Ayobi had paid a classmate $500 to carry out the killing. Despite her attempts to mislead the authorities by later claiming that the CIA was involved in her husband's death, the evidence against her was overwhelming.
Shajia Ayobi was found guilty of first-degree murder in May 2013. During the trial, it was disclosed that she had approached Jake Clark, a fellow student at Kaplan College, about killing her husband. Clark, who was also arrested in connection with the case, denied involvement despite evidence linking him to the crime, including his DNA on a bag containing the murder weapon and the victim's ID. Shajia Ayobi was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison for her role in the murder.
The case highlighted the devastating impact on the Ayobi family, particularly their children, who were left to grapple with the loss of their father and the incarceration of their mother. The trial and subsequent sentencing brought some closure to the family, but the emotional scars from the tragic event remain.
