Summary based on 9 sources
Carolina Ramirez, a 16-year-old Latina, tragically lost her life on February 26, 2012, in Wilmington, Los Angeles. She was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting that also claimed the life of Meldrick Melgoza, another 16-year-old. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in the 500 block of Bay View Avenue. According to reports, someone in a car pulled up to the two teens and opened fire. Melgoza was shot first, and Ramirez, in an attempt to escape, ran to a parked car and tried to hide underneath it. Unfortunately, she was found with gunshot wounds to her chest and legs and was pronounced dead at the scene along with Melgoza.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and it is not known if the killings were gang-related. The area where the incident took place had been experiencing a surge in violent crimes, with 53 homicides reported within a two-mile radius since 2007. Despite the increase in patrols and detectives assigned to the case, the investigation faced significant challenges due to the lack of cooperation from witnesses. Residents in the area were reluctant to speak out, fearing retaliation.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspects remain unidentified. The Los Angeles Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward, but the case remains unsolved. The tragic deaths of Carolina Ramirez and Meldrick Melgoza highlight the ongoing issue of violence in certain neighborhoods and the difficulties law enforcement faces in solving such crimes without community support.
