Jade Douglas Harris, a 30-year-old ex-convict and known gang member, was arrested and charged with three counts of murder and two counts of attempted
murder, among other charges. Authorities believe Harris went to United States Fire Protection, a business co-owned by Perez-Ruelas' husband, intending to rob the owners of a 2010 Camaro listed for sale on Craigslist. When the workers at the business could not provide the keys, Harris allegedly shot and killed two workers and wounded a third. He then forced Perez-Ruelas, who had just arrived at the store with her son, to take him back to their home to obtain the keys. There, Harris shot and killed her and wounded her son.
The case against Harris was prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Harris was found guilty of three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, four counts of kidnapping for carjacking, and one count of being a felon with a firearm. The special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder during the commission of a burglary, carjacking, and kidnapping were found to be true. Harris had prior felony convictions for robbery, attempted robbery, and carrying a concealed weapon.
