Rafael Aguilar Rodriguez, a 22-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on November 6, 2012, in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, the incident occurred in the 3300 block of Hunter Street. Rafael was at the home of Gustavo Lopez, a 29-year-old Latino, when Gustavo's brother, Israel Lopez, entered the room and opened fire.
Gustavo Lopez was hit multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene, while Rafael Aguilar Rodriguez was shot once and later succumbed to his injuries at County USC Medical Center.
Israel Lopez, a 25-year-old Latino, was taken into custody without incident at the scene. The alleged murder weapon was recovered, and Israel Lopez was held without bail at the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles. He faced charges of first-degree murder for the deaths of both his brother, Gustavo, and Rafael Aguilar Rodriguez. His next court appearance was scheduled for November 26, 2012, at the Los Angeles Municipal Court.
The investigation into the double homicide was conducted by the Hollenbeck homicide detectives. Authorities urged anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact the detectives or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. The case drew significant attention due to the familial nature of the crime and the tragic loss of two young lives.
