Jose Luis Horta, a 34-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on June 20, 2014, in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to coroner's records, Horta was walking his dog around 1:45 a.m. on South Figueroa Street when a brown van approached him. A person inside the van fired multiple shots, striking Horta. Nearby officers heard the gunshots and found Horta lying on the sidewalk. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:41 a.m.
