Jose Luis Horta, a 34-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on June 20, 2014, in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to coroner's records, Horta was walking his dog around 1:45 a.m. on South Figueroa Street when a brown van approached him. A person inside the van fired multiple shots, striking Horta. Nearby officers heard the gunshots and found Horta lying on the sidewalk.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:41 a.m.
The incident prompted an immediate police response, leading to a high-speed chase. The van, pursued by officers, eventually crashed into a pole near Los Angeles International Airport. Three suspects were apprehended at the scene: Eric Richard Sailor, a 22-year-old Latino; Daniel Alonzo Martinez, a 20-year-old Latino; and Julio Reyes Pena, a 17-year-old Latino. A firearm was recovered from the van, linking the suspects to the crime.
Following their arrest, Sailor, Martinez, and Pena were charged with one count of murder and robbery. Pena, despite being a minor, was charged as an adult. Additionally, Martinez faced an extra charge of unlawful firearm activity, while Sailor was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office filed these charges on June 24, 2014.
The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the subsequent police chase. The LAPD Criminal Gang Homicide Division took over the investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward. The community's response and the swift action by law enforcement highlighted the ongoing efforts to address violent crime in Los Angeles. The case against the suspects proceeded through the legal system, with each facing serious charges that could result in lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
