Robert James Flaherty, a 30-year-old resident of Garberville, California, was reported missing by his family in July 2014. His partially skeletonized remains were discovered on October 14, 2014, in a transient camp located in a wooded area off Redwood Drive in Garberville. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office identified the remains and determined that Flaherty had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
