Jeremy Dieter Kuemmel, aged 32, tragically lost his life on August 14, 2018, in Garberville, California. His death, along with that of Tiffany Marie Ellebrecht, 31, was discovered under harrowing circumstances. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) reported that both victims were found in a vehicle engulfed in flames on Briceland Road near the Ettersburg Junction. Autopsies revealed that the cause of death for both individuals was gunshot wounds.
The vehicle was set on fire after the murders, adding a gruesome layer to the crime scene.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Ulisses Rodriguez, a 24-year-old man from Chico, California. Rodriguez was charged with two counts of murder, each with special allegations of using a firearm, one count of making criminal threats involving a firearm, and one count of arson. The victims had been working and living on Rodriguez's marijuana farm in the China Creek area. According to trial testimony, Rodriguez shot both Kuemmel and Ellebrecht, then coerced another worker to help move their bodies into the vehicle, which was subsequently set ablaze.
The legal proceedings culminated in February 2022, when a Humboldt County jury found Rodriguez guilty of all charges. The charges included the first-degree murders of Kuemmel and Ellebrecht, arson, and criminal threats against a witness. The jury also upheld the special allegation that Rodriguez personally used a firearm in the commission of the murders. Witnesses from the grow site, including the coerced worker, provided crucial testimony that helped secure the conviction. Rodriguez faces a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole, with sentencing scheduled for April 1, 2022.
