On October 22, 2014, nine-year-old Ximena Meza was tragically killed in Anaheim, California. Ximena was playing with her sisters in front of their apartment complex when she was struck by a bullet during a gang-related shooting. The incident occurred in the 2300 block of West Greenacre Avenue, a neighborhood known for gang activity. Ximena was shot in the chest and, despite efforts to resuscitate her, she succumbed to her injuries at UCI Medical Center.
The investigation into Ximena's
death led to the arrest of Alfredo Aquino and Ricardo Cruz, both of whom were identified as gang members. The two men were involved in a confrontation with rival gang members when the shooting occurred. Aquino and Cruz were charged with second-degree murder, street terrorism, and firearm possession, with additional sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity and vicarious discharge of a firearm causing death by a gang member.
In May 2019, both Aquino and Cruz were convicted of Ximena's murder. The trial revealed that the shooting was a result of gang cross-fire, and the bullet that killed Ximena was not intended for her. Witnesses described the harrowing scene, with Ximena's father desperately pleading for her survival as she lay wounded. The community was deeply affected by the senseless loss of such a young life.
Following their conviction, Aquino and Cruz were sentenced to 55 years to life in prison in January 2020. The sentencing brought some measure of justice for Ximena's family, though the pain of her loss remains. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence on innocent lives and underscored the need for continued efforts to address gang activity in communities.
