The primary suspect in Esqueda's murder was Marcus Serhan, a 41-year-old man from Rodeo.
Serhan was charged with Esqueda's murder shortly after the incident. According to prosecutors, the altercation between Esqueda and Serhan turned deadly when Serhan shot Esqueda multiple times. Following the shooting, Serhan led police on a wild chase through several towns before being apprehended. In 2016, Serhan took a plea deal, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter and other charges related to the police chase. As part of the plea agreement, Serhan was sentenced to 18 years and eight months in prison.
