Khaleel Johnson, a 19-year-old resident of Seaside, California, tragically lost his life on March 15, 2015, in a shooting incident on Highway 1 in Sand City. The incident occurred just after midnight as Johnson and another individual were traveling north through Sand City. According to reports, someone in another vehicle opened fire on their car, resulting in Johnson receiving a fatal gunshot wound. The driver, who also sustained a gunshot wound, managed to navigate to the Valero Corner Store off Highway 1, where police discovered the vehicle between 1 and 2 a.m. Johnson was found dead in the passenger seat, while the driver was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

The investigation into Johnson's death revealed that he had been involved in gang-related activities. In January 2015, Johnson was among eight individuals arrested on suspicion of participating in retaliatory gang shootings in Seaside. These incidents were believed to be part of an ongoing gang war between the Crips and Norteños. Despite his criminal record, Johnson's death shocked the community, and friends and family took to social media to express their grief, popularizing the hashtag #LongLiveLeeLee.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Sand City police arrested 19-year-old Ivis Ruvalcaba of Seaside on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, firearm, and gang enhancements. Another suspect, 19-year-old Edward Rodriguez, also of Seaside, was identified but remained at large. An arrest warrant was issued for Rodriguez on charges identical to those faced by Ruvalcaba. The investigation was led by the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team, with assistance from the Monterey Police Department and the Monterey County District Attorney's Office. Despite the arrests, the case highlighted the ongoing challenges of gang violence in the region and the impact it had on the community.
