Maria Isabel Duarte, aged 31, tragically lost her life on April 12, 2015, in Desert Hot Springs, California. She was found lying face-down on a sidewalk in the area of Palm Drive and Pierson Boulevard shortly before 3 a.m. that day. Duarte had sustained a gunshot wound to her chest and was pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The investigation into her death revealed that she had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, Juan Garza, which led detectives to interview him. However, it was his brother, Jesus Garza Jr., who became the primary suspect.
Jesus Garza Jr. was arrested in 2016 while serving a sentence for second-degree robbery at Norco State Prison. Multiple witnesses identified him as the shooter, and he was charged with Duarte's murder. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and seeing Garza walking away from the scene. Additionally, Garza's brother testified that Jesus had left their apartment around midnight on the night of the murder and returned an hour later, acting suspiciously and admitting to having done something "stupid." Further investigation revealed that Garza had allegedly confessed to killing Duarte to several fellow inmates, stating that he loved her and killed her out of jealousy.
