Alvaro Mata, a 30-year-old taco vendor from Bell Gardens, Los Angeles, was tragically killed on June 19, 2015. Mata was working late at his taco stand near the intersection of 51st Street and McKinley Avenue in South Los Angeles when he was approached by three men. The suspects, believed to be gang members, attempted to rob Mata before one of them shot him in the face. Mata was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surveillance footage, witness interviews, and a stroke of luck led to the arrest of three suspects just five blocks away from the crime scene. The suspects were found armed and in the same vehicle seen on the night of the murder. Although the police did not release the names of the suspects due to the ongoing investigation, they confirmed that the men were gang members targeting undocumented immigrants working as vendors.
The community was deeply affected by Mata's death. He was well-known and loved for his kindness and dedication to his work. City Councilman Curren Price highlighted the impact of Mata's loss, stating that it not only robbed his family but also the community of a hardworking and caring individual. Mata's family sought to raise funds to send his body back to Mexico for burial.
