Eduardo Reyes, a 35-year-old resident of Citrus Heights, California, died on June 22, 2015, in an officer-involved shooting. The incident began when Reyes, who had been drinking heavily throughout the day, returned home and became verbally and physically abusive towards his wife, Lisa Reyes. Concerned for her safety and that of their children, Lisa called 911 to report the domestic violence.
When officers arrived at the apartment complex on Greenback Lane, Reyes, who was intoxicated and agitated, began shooting at them. In response, four officers returned fire, resulting in Reyes' death.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office conducted an independent review of the shooting and concluded that the officers' actions were lawful. The investigation included a thorough examination of written reports, 911 recordings, dispatch logs, radio traffic recordings, witness interviews, scene videos, diagrams, photographs, and forensic reports. The review determined that the officers acted in self-defense and in defense of others, given the immediate threat posed by Reyes' actions.
No criminal charges were filed against the officers involved in the shooting. The officers were placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure in such cases. The incident was a tragic culmination of a domestic dispute exacerbated by alcohol, leading to a fatal confrontation with law enforcement.
