Jacob Lopez, a 20-year-old rising rap artist known by his stage name "Lul Tys," was tragically shot and killed on May 23, 2022, at the Birdcage Village Apartments in Citrus Heights, California. The incident occurred around 10:55 p.m. when Citrus Heights police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Lopez inside an apartment with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 20-year-old man, later identified as Tony Diaz, was found critically injured outside the apartment and was transported to a local hospital.
Lopez's death was not considered a random act, as police indicated that both men likely knew each other. However, Lopez's father, Nathan Lopez, disputed this claim. Jacob Lopez was a promising figure in the hip-hop scene, having recently signed a six-figure contract with Empire Records. His music videos, which often featured Norteno gang symbols, handguns, and cash, had garnered millions of views on YouTube.
Despite the initial charges against Tony Diaz for murder and possession of a machine gun, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office ultimately found insufficient evidence to charge him with homicide. Diaz pled no contest to the felony possession of a machine gun and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years probation. This outcome left the Lopez family without closure, as they continued to seek justice for Jacob's death.
The Lopez family has been vocal about their frustration with the justice system, highlighting the repeated offenses by Diaz, who faced additional weapon-related charges shortly after his release. They have joined forces with other families who have lost loved ones to gun violence, advocating for stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies. The case remains a poignant example of the challenges faced by families seeking justice in the wake of violent crimes.
